New to the Realms?

Getting Connected

To play Realms of the Dragon, you need a MUD client installed on your computer. We recommend Mudlet for most players — it works on Windows, Mac, and Linux, and is completely free.

Once you have a client, connect using:

mud.rod.org  port  3000

For more client options, visit our MUD Clients & Connection page.

Creating Your Character

When you first connect, you will be asked to choose a character name. Pick a fantasy-style name that fits the world — names from popular books and movies are often taken. The game will guide you through selecting your race, gender, and starting stats.

Don't stress too much about your first character. Many players create a second or third character once they have a feel for the game. The important thing is to jump in and start exploring.

Your First Steps

Once you are in the game, the basics are simple:

Looking around: Type look to see the room you are in. Signs, objects, and NPCs in the room description can usually be examined with look <thing>.

Moving: Type a direction to move — north, south, east, west, up, down. Most players shorten these to n, s, e, w, u, d.

Talking: Type say Hello! to speak to anyone in your room. Use tell <name> message to send a private message to another player anywhere in the game.

Getting help: Type help to access the in-game help system. It covers everything from combat to crafting to communication.

Choosing a Guild

Early on you will want to join a guild — this is your character's profession and determines what spells, skills, and combat abilities you will learn. The Realms has over twenty distinct guilds, from sword-wielding fighters to powerful wizards to stealthy assassins.

Visit our Guilds page for an overview of each guild, or ask on the newbie channel in-game for recommendations based on your play style.

Getting Help from Other Players

The Realms has an active community of players who are happy to help newcomers. Use the newbie channel to ask questions — type newbie your question here and experienced players will respond.

You can also join our Discord server to chat with the community outside the game, share tips, and stay up to date on events.
